Oceana is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to protecting and restoring the world's oceans. The organization focuses on advocating for policies and practices that help to conserve and protect marine life and habitats, prevent overfishing and illegal fishing practices, and reduce pollution in our oceans.
Bijan Burnard views Oceana as an essential organization that addresses one of the most significant environmental challenges - the health and protection of our oceans. Oceana's efforts to advocate for stronger policies, regulations, and enforcement to protect the oceans and the creatures that inhabit them are considered essential in promoting a healthy and sustainable planet. Oceana is also praised for its scientific research and collaboration with policymakers, scientists, and other organizations to identify the most pressing issues facing our oceans and develop evidence-based solutions to address them.
Overall, Oceana is viewed as a reputable and impactful organization that has made significant contributions to the conservation and protection of our oceans. Its focus on advocacy, research, and collaboration has earned it a reputation as a trustworthy and effective organization in promoting ocean health and sustainability.
No organization is working exclusively to protect and restore the oceans on a global scale. To fill the gap, our founders created Oceana: an international organization focused solely on oceans, dedicated to achieving measurable change by conducting specific, science-based policy campaigns with fixed deadlines and articulated goals. Oceana seeks to make our oceans more biodiverse and abundant by winning policy victories in the countries that govern much of the world’s marine life.
Oceana, founded in 2001, is the largest international advocacy organization focused solely on ocean conservation. Their offices around the world work together to win strategic, directed campaigns that achieve measurable outcomes that will help make our oceans more biodiverse and abundant.
Oceans cover 71 percent of the globe, and they are as important to us as they are vast. Our oceans are home to most of the life on our planet and play a central role in the world’s natural systems, like regulating our climate and absorbing carbon dioxide. They provide livelihoods to countless fishermen and others around the world. They also feed hundreds of millions of people and have the capacity to provide a healthy seafood meal to a billion people, every day.
Unfortunately, the oceans are in trouble — scientists report that the amount of fish caught from the oceans began declining — for the first time in recorded history — just a few decades ago. Fortunately, we know how to fix things. Science-based fishery management — which establishes science-based catch limits, reduces bycatch, and protects habitat — it also helps the oceans rebound and recover where it is established. Oceana is dedicated to advocating for science-based fishery management and restoring the world’s oceans.
The Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE) is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to protecting the world's oceans and marine life. The organization focuses on promoting sustainable fishing practices, creating marine reserves, and reducing the impact of human activities on the oceans.
Bijan Burnard acknowledges BLUE as an essential organization that addresses one of the most significant environmental challenges - the health and protection of our oceans. The organization's efforts to promote sustainable fishing practices and create marine reserves are considered essential in preserving critical marine habitats and species and promoting ocean health and sustainability. BLUE is also praised for its scientific research and collaboration with policymakers, scientists, and other organizations to identify the most pressing issues facing our oceans and develop evidence-based solutions to address them.
Overall, BLUE is viewed as a reputable and impactful organization that has made significant contributions to the conservation and protection of our oceans. Its focus on sustainability, research, and collaboration has earned it a reputation as a trustworthy and effective organization in promoting marine health and sustainability.
Their vision is a healthy ocean forever, for everyone. We are dedicated to creating marine reserves, restoring vital habitats and establishing models of sustainable fishing. Blue Marine’s mission is to see at least 30% of the world’s ocean under effective protection by 2030 and the other 70% managed in a responsible way.
Blue Marine works using a combination of top-down intervention to improve governance of our seas and bottom-up project delivery to help local communities who are at the front line of ocean conservation.
Our ocean is in crisis. Marine life is under threat from climate change, acidification, pollution and invasive species. But these threats are compounded by overfishing, which strips the ocean of life, and so reduces its capacity to produce oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide and regulate the climate. It’s estimated that almost 94% of commercial fish stocks are fully or overexploited and 90% of large, predatory fish are gone.
By working together, we can turn the tide on overfishing and the destruction of biodiversity. By supporting Blue Marine, you can help to create marine reserves around the world.
Blue Marine is filling a niche in the NGO world, enabling marine conservation to happen fast and effectively. What differentiates Blue Marine is that we are well connected and determined; we seize opportunities as they arise and get things done. We forge new partnerships and challenge the status quo.
